The Castle of Mespelbrunn and Spessart

The pearl of the Spessart – the moated castle Mespelbrunn – is located at the A3 between Würzburg and Frankfurt, exit Rohrbrunn. The Spessart with its gorgeous forests is a low mountain range between Bavaria and Hessen. It reaches up to Walduern in the south, Würzburg in the east, Aschaffenburg in the west and Fulda in the north. You may expect numerous places of interest: Aschaffenburg with the castle Johannisburg and various interesting museums. In the south of Aschaffenburg, following cities at the Main are easily accessable: Obernburg, Klingenberg, Miltenberg with the Engelsburg monastery as well as Amorbach with its famous baroque abbey church. The journey time from Groß-Umstadt to Aschaffenburg averages 20 minutes; the journey time from Groß-Umstadt to Mespelbrunn or Miltenberg/Amorbach averages 50 minutes.

Heidelberg and surrounding

The city with the most often photographed German castle ruin is located at the A5 (exit interchange to the A656 towards Heidelberg). In Heidelberg, there are various other places of interest and if you continue towards Eberbach alongside the Neckar, you may attend many further impressions. Speyer with its cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981) is located south western of Heidelberg. The World Heritage Site of Maulbronn (since 1993), an ancient monastery is located in south eastern of Heidelberg. You can find the Hessian “Bergstraße” with the cities Bensheim, Weinheim and Heppenheim at the B3 towards Darmstadt. The monastery at Lorsch (UNESCO World Heritage Sight) is another highlight. The journey time form Groß-Umstadt to Heidelberg via the autobahn averages 60 minutes; if you take the more interesting route via the B45 to Eberbach and continue on the B37, the journey time averages 90 minutes.

Frankfurt/Main and surrounding

Frankfurt on the Main is an economical and financial hotspot, an international exhibition center and – because of the airport – a gateway to the world. But there are also many other lovely and admirable aspects: the rebuilded “Alte Oper”, the timbered houses at the “Roemerberg”, the district of Sachsenhausen with its numerous cider bars, the museum bank at the Main. The nature historical museum of Senckenberg and the Palmengarten have to be mentioned either. Numerous trips to the surrounding may be offered: The medieval cities of the Taunus, far of all metropolitan hustle and bustle – Kronberg, Königsstein and Idstein – are located in the west of Frankfurt. Near Bad Homburg, a perfectly reconstructed roman fort is waiting for you. The Hochtaunus offers pure nature in the middle of the densely populated Rhein-Main area. The journey time from Groß-Umstadt to Frankfurt/ Center averages 40 minutes.

Ronneburg

The castle ruin Ronneburg – a renaissance princely site – is located near the A45. The hills in the surrounding of the Ronneburg are an Eldorado for paragliding because of the advantageous winds. From here, the medieval oldtowns Buedingen and Gelnhausen with its timbered houses are easily accessible. Hanau’s attractions are hidden until the second look: Within rather less beautiful industrial and harbor facilities, a picturesque old-town is located – also in Hanau-Steinheim. Seligenstadt’s most famous place of interest is the Einhardts-Basilica. Please calculate an average journey time from Groß-Umstadt to the Ronneburg of 45 minutes.

Darmstadt

With its 1899 founded artist’s colony, Darmstadt is known as the German Mecca of art nouveau. The Russian chapel is also located at the area of the Mathildenhoehe. The residence of the grand duke (castle), the renaissance building of the ancient town hall, the “Lange Ludwig”, the orangery in the baroque garden of Bessungen as well as – among other highlights – the unchanged working places of Joseph Beuys in the Hessian state museum, are further places of interest in Darmstadt. In Worms south western of Darmstadt you can find a remarkable cathedral. The monastery of Lorsch – an UNESCO World Heritage Site – is located in the south west of Darmstadt either. The Hessian “Bergstraße” with its famous cities Zwingenberg, Heppenheim and Bensheim begins in the south of Darmstadt. The metropolis of Rhineland-Palatine Mainz and the Hessian capital Wiesbaden are located in the north east of Darmstadt. The journey time from Groß-Umstadt to Darmstadt averages 20 minutes.

Groß-Umstadt and the Odenwald

Groß-Umstadt is considered to be the gateway to the Odenwald. It is the most eastern enclave of the winegrowing-area "Hessische Bergstraße". The marketplace is dominated by a renaissance style town hall. The amount of restaurants (also international) is enormous. The way of live, which is influenced by the rather warm climate, is the reason for many festivities (e.g. the famous "Winzerfest"). Those festivities are also very attractive to people coming from the metropolises in the surrounding. It takes only 20 minutes to reach the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site “Grube Messel”. It takes also only 20 minutes to reach Michelstadt with its famous town hall and further 10 minutes to reach Erbach, which is the famous ivory-carver’s town. The journey time to the castle ruin Otzberg – the first real elevation in the Rhein-Main-area – averages either not more than 10 minutes.
